The Case of the Lost Baby Elephant

By Soumya Mody

Feddy went with his friends Barry, Picks, Laisy, Bits and the dog Paddy. They found a nice place for camping. They unpacked their bags and started setting up their tent and campfire, and preparing the barbecue. They had fun dancing around the campfire. They enjoyed their meal. After a long day they got tired and decided to go to sleep.

Suddenly, a strange loud sound could be heard nearby.

The sound was like Thump Thump..

They forced their eyes open as they were still sleepy and saw that it was a baby elephant. The baby elephant was lost and was looking for its mama elephant and papa elephant.

"Feddy said in a loud whisper", “It is a baby elephant.” He woke Barry who was already snoring like a tractor.

The baby elephant looked really sad, and there were big tears rolling down his chubby cheeks. Feddy stood up like a detective and said, “Don’t worry, we will find your family!” Paddy barked twice. That meant he was in too. Barry, Laisy, Picks, and Bits all nodded.

They gave the baby elephant a banana from their food bag. He munched it like he hadn’t eaten in days! While he ate, Feddy asked, “Where did you last see your mama and papa?” He pointed his trunk toward the dark trees.

They packed their bags and started walking in the dark forest. Feddy took out his magnifying glass and started looking for clues.

Bits found some huge footprints. Barry climbed up a tree to look from above. He used the torch and saw a big trail of broken branches heading toward the river!

“That must be where the elephants went!” Feddy said.

It was a little scary, walking through the forest at night. They heard owls, frogs, and rattling of the snakes. Paddy kept them safe, growling at shadows and wagging his tail like a hero.

Suddenly, they heard more Thump-Thump sounds but these ones were louder. Feddy held his breath and tiptoed through the bushes and there they were! Two giant elephants! One had big tusks and the other had kind, warm eyes. When the baby elephant saw them, he trumpeted so loud it made his hair fly back!

“Mama! Papa!” he squealed and ran to them. They wrapped their trunks around him in the biggest elephant hug ever.

Then they waved goodbye to the elephant family and walked into the moonlight to our home as it was almost sunrise.
