A Summer Adventure

By Arjun Kodoth

It was a summer morning and the sun was blazing. My brothers Vihan, Aveer and I, Arjun, took our dog Oreo for a walk to the garden near our house. It is usually very peaceful but the scorching sun today made it difficult to enjoy. Right next to the garden stood an old and creepy haunted house. Suddenly Oreo tugged at his leash and ran inside. We gasped in shock as we saw his fluffy tail disappear through the creaky door.

After taking a deep breath and holding each other’s hands, we slowly stepped inside the house, our hearts pounding with every step. The door creaked as we tried to open it to enter the house, and a shiver ran down our spines. The house was full of cobwebs, and tiny spiders crawled everywhere. Lizards scurried across the walls, and we even spotted some rats in the shadows. Suddenly, we heard voices we tiptoed toward the sound, hoping to find people who could help us.

But instead of people, we saw ghosts! To our relief, they didn’t look scary at all. Their bodies were see-through and their eyes sparkled like tiny lanterns. To be honest, I thought they were a little cute. We were a little frightened, but also curious to meet them. My brothers, Vihan and Aveer, were still afraid, so I held their hands and told them, “Don’t worry, they don't look scary.”

The ghost floated closer and spoke in a soft voice: “Never enter the 7th room of this house, or you will be in great danger.” Suddenly we heard a loud barking sound. We followed it. Our hearts skipped a beat as we realized the noise was coming from the 7th room as we then remembered the ghost warning. We stood there frozen, unsure what to do next.

For a moment, we wanted to run, we exchanged nervous glances, unsure if we should risk it. But then we saw through the 7th-room window that Oreo was happily playing with his ball outside. We found the door to the 7th room and crept in carefully. Oreo immediately hid under the bed. Aveer and I crawled closer, but we couldn’t see him. Instead, we noticed a big, dark hole in the floor.

Though scared we climbed down and at the bottom, we finally spotted Oreo, whimpering softly and wagging his tail as if begging us to hurry. Relieved, we rushed to untangle him and pull him safely into our arms. We rescued him and carried him safely out of the house. When we got back home, we told our parents everything that had happened. They listened with a smile, praising our bravery.

Then they gently reminded us, “Be careful next time, and always keep Oreo on a leash.” We nodded, feeling proud but also a little wiser after our summer adventure.
